How do I grow my business?
When your business is up and running, you can’t stop still; you always have to be thinking about where it goes next and how to keep it going.
For example, you need to keep up to date with the latest trends in marketing, to ensure that you are reaching all your potential customers.
If you want to grow the business needs to be in the right shape. The methods and services you used to run the business as a start-up may not be suitable for a larger business. You may need to adapt how you run it so that:
- It is running efficiently, there’s no point expanding waste
- You have a plan for growth, so you know which way you are going
- You have a loyal and growing fan base
Small Business Clinic Workshops
We have developed a series of workshops to help established businesses. They cover a wide range of subjects and provide practical advice and support on areas such as digital marketing, social media and running an efficient business. Some allow you to get to grips with popular tools, such as MailChimp, whist others allow you to sit back and think about your business, how it functions and where it goes next. They also allow you to meet others in similar positions to yourself and learn from their experiences.
We run workshops throughout the year, so have a look at our workshop timetable for the ones you are interested in.
Here are the workshops we run, broken down into categories to help you find the ones that interest you.
Making your website work for your business.
We have a series of four workshop which cover this area:
You can have the most spectacular website in the world but still not get any business from it. You need to make sure it not only looks good but also works for your users.
In this workshop we examine the various factors that make a website work for your business or act as a complete turn off for potential customers. We will give you lots of tips on what to do and what to avoid when creating or updating your website.
This follows on from the “Designing a business website” workshop. It is aimed at making sure your website can be found by your customers, after all there is no point having the perfect website if no one can find it. We lift the veil from Search Engine Optimisation and show how to improve the performance of your website in search engines.
What you say and how you say it colours how people think about your business. You need to make sure that you create the right impression. This is particularly true of your digital marketing: your website and social media. If the words are wrong then you may lose potential customers even if the images are just right.
In this workshop you learn how to:
- Create the right impression of your business by using about the correct type of language for the situation
- Write engaging content for your website
- Write memorable tweets and posts
- Improve your SEO by targeting your content correctly
WordPress is a very popular and powerful tool for creating websites. It is designed for ordinary people to use, as opposed to geeks and techies, and so suits small businesses well.
In the first workshop we teach you how to use WordPress to create your website: what all the terms mean, how to edit pages and posts, adding pictures and how to create a menu. In the second we go deeper into website design with WordPress – using themes and plugins – to help you create a website that has the right functionality and looks good too.
Google Analytics provides you with a wealth of information about the visitors to your website. Make sure you take advantage and use this information to improve your marketing and hence sales.
In the workshop we start with a brief introduction to Search Engine Optimisation to put everything in context. After this we take an in-depth tour of the Google Analytics console and all it contains. We show you how you can use the information there to improve your visitor’s experience of your website as well as getting them doing what you want.
Digital Marketing and Social Media
This is an important area for business and is so large, it is difficult to learn all of it on your own. Our courses are aimed at people who want practical help to get started with the most popular tools in this area.
Email marketing keeps you in touch with your customers but we all know how many emails we receive and simply throw away. You need to stand out from the crowd and make an impact if your audience is going to pay attention.
MailChimp is a good tool for email marketing and for any emails to customers or members. You can use it to design eye-catching emails. It also provides facilities for managing the emails and monitoring the effectiveness of your marketing.
We run two practical workshops for people new to MailChimp or those who want to know how to use it effectively for their business. In the first, we concentrate on making sure that you set MailChimp up correctly, as getting it wrong can reduce its effectiveness markedly. We explain how you can use groups and segments to ensure that your emails are targeted to the people you need to reach rather than creating junk mail in everyone else’s inbox. In the second we cover the best ways to use it to generate stylish emails and how you can monitor the effectiveness of your marketing.
This workshop is all about practical tweeting to promote your business.
You have probably heard a lot about Twitter and perhaps dabbled in it a little bit, but does it leave you feeling lost as to how to make use of it for your business? If so, this is the workshop for you!
We will look at how different business make use of Twitter and then put it into practice ourselves. During the workshop there will be a ‘crafty’ demonstration (different at each event). We will tweet the progress of the demonstration and monitor the results on Twitter.
Don’t worry if you are not already set up on Twitter, we can get you set up during the workshop.
There are many different social media applications available, but which one will work best for your business?
We take you on a tour of the most popular applications, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. We show you how each can work to the advantage of your business. As part of the tour, we show you how to set up the tools and discuss the best ways to use them and build them into your marketing strategy.

An introduction to cloud services for business
Your business already makes use of the cloud in the form of email and your website, but there are many more services available. Cloud computing allows small businesses to use corporate-class systems at an affordable price and without the need for specialist IT skills.

Do you know the best price for your products and/or services?
Could you charge more or should you be charging less?
Working out how much you should charge for a product or service can be hard. Sometimes it feels as though you are a magician making numbers appear out of thin air. Yet there is a logic to pricing and the aim of this workshop is to show you how to apply it to your business.
In this workshop you will learn about the different ways price can be calculated. We will show you what influences the price and how you can make sure that your price covers your true cost.
